Kindergarten Readiness Workshop

FREE 6 week workshop for both parents and children 4 years and older. The classes focus on skills children need introduction to before entering Kindergarten. Each fun filled class will provide children with an introduction of literacy, math, science, art, and music. While parents receive helpful information to help their child prepare for school and how to be involved in their child's education throughout the school years.

National PTA® is pleased to announce Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States, will be the keynote speaker at PTA's Legislative Conference.

Her keynote address will be Wednesday, March 10, 12:30 – 2:15 p.m. EST.

The First Lady is slated to speak about her national campaign "Let's Move"—a movement pertinent to the National PTA's efforts toward fighting childhood obesity and promoting healthy lifestyles. Her address is part of PTA's National Legislative Conference taking place March 9-11 in Arlington, VA.

County Commissioner's Meeting Regarding Proposed Power Line

There will be a County Commissioner's meeting tomorrow evening, Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 7:00 PM at the Tooele County building downstairs on the south side. This meeting will be regarding the proposed power line that Rocky Mountain Power wants to put in our community. The proposed route would take the line along SR-36 within a quarter mile or so of many of our homes and Settlement Canyon Elementary School. I was contacted today by a local community action group who tell me that all interested members of the community are welcome to attend, and asked that I let our PTA members know about the scheduled meeting.

The Tooele County Babe Ruth Baseball League will be conducting their 2010 registration during the next two weeks of February. Registration for the Tooele County Babe Ruth League will be at Tooele City Hall on Thursday, Feb. 18 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Local youth ages 5 through 15 are encouraged to register for the local baseball program. Birth certificates are required for all players except previously registered players with birth certificates on record. Playing age is based on the player’s age as of April 30, 2010. Registration fees are $45 for players ages 5 through 8. Fees for ages 9 through 12 will be $80. Registration fees for players 13 through 15 is $95.

Our Family Literacy Night Extravaganza is going to be on Tuesday, February 2nd from 5-7 p.m. We will be having a myriad of literacy games and activities, community readers, selling pizza and other goodies, and giving out free books! We will also be having a book exchange! Start gathering some of your gently used books, bring them to your student's teacher by January 29th, then take home that many books on the night of the Extravaganza!

Open Enrollment, school year 2010-11

Tooele County School District will be accepting applications from elementary and secondary students who are interested in enrolling in a school outside their resident school boundary for the 2010-11 school year. The application window is December 1st through February 19th, 2010. Individual applications will not be sent home with students. If students were approved for the 2009-2010 school year, they do not need to reapply.An application is only needed to switch schools. Guiding Good Choices

Guiding Good Choices is a science-based, proven-effective prevention program that gives parents the skills they need to ensure the future well-being of their children.

In just five 2-hour workshops, Guiding Good Choices can help parents reduce or prevent substance abuse and other problem behaviors in their children.

Our school and PTA will be hosting FREE sessions of this program in 2010! We really need your support. We are working toward a free Steve James assembly for our school. This assembly is valued at $300 but we can get it free compliments of Communities That Care and Most Don't if we have 20 families from our school commit to and complete the Guiding Good Choices Workshop.

Workshops will be once a week for five weeks 7-9 pm in the Community Room.
Thursdays 1/7/2010-2/4-2010 OR Tuesdays 2/16/2010-3/16/2010.

Reflections Award Ceremony

SAVE THE DATE... The Awards Ceremony for the Reflections program will be held this Friday, Nov. 20th. in the school cafeteria. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. to view the projects and the ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. Invitations to students and their families that participated will be in the mail this week. We had a total of 86 entries this year!

Veterans Day Program

The Settlement Canyon Elementary School Choir will be performing a Veterans Day Program on Tuesday, November 10th at 7:02 p.m. at the school. The program will feature 80+ students singing songs from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War as well as honoring each branch of the military.

We will be meeting Wednesday, November 4th at 1:30 to discuss design and distribution of SCES t-shirts. The meeting should be short (I expect it to be about 30-40 minutes). We need to decide on a design and pricing for shirts so that I can get an order form printed up and sent out to students. The nominating committee is responsible to seek out and nominate the best-qualified eligible person for each open office of our executive board. Three committee members and two alternates will be elected to serve on the committee from these nominations in November.
